NEW DELHI: While attending the marriage ceremony of one’s daughter, son or other relatives, one has reasons to be alert if a smartly dressed unknown lady approaches, for she might be a thief in disguise, waiting for the right opportune moment to strike.

Delhi Police recently launched a massive crackdown on women robbers, who attend marriages in the Delhincr region and dress stylishly so as to reduce suspicion, and arrested three women.

The accused, Rano, Varsha and Manisha are thieves who frequented beauty parlours and wore expensive outfits to match their high profile targets, while attending weddings at five-star hotels. The accused, well-versed in etiquettes required to fit in at high-profile gatherings, would walk with elegance and grace, while their eyes travelled 360 degrees searching for jewellery and other valuables that the guests would carry.

“They would be welldressed and smartly dodge CCTV cameras and marriage photographers, and leave no proof after they flee with the valuables,” said Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime), Ravinder Yadav.

With the marriage procession a few meters away from the wedding venue, these women would dance, sing and mingle with the guests.

They would target the bride or the groom’s mother, who would be carrying jewels and valuables. The accused would sit beside their victim and steal the valuables, with others staying occupied.

They even employed an auto-driver, Satish Yadav, who would be paid handsomely for waiting outside the marriage venue or hotel to drive them away. Yadav has also been arrested along with the three ladies.

The gang travelled from Rajgarh in Madhya Pradesh to commit thefts in Delhi. They booked a hotel and immediately made off with the stolen valuables to Madhya Pradesh.

Police suspect that the accused are part of a wider network and police teams will soon be sent to Rajgarh to find out the buyer of the stolen valuables.

They are now verifying whether the accused were involved in other thefts across Delhi. A few days ago, a gang from Madhya Pradesh with a similar modus operandi, was arrested.
