- OUR CORRESPONDENT

GHAZIABAD: The Ghaziabad Police, on Tuesday, arrested two persons with scrapped currency notes worth Rs 2 lakh from Ghanta ghar area of Ghaziabad. The duo was carrying the money in Rs 1000 currency notes, police said.

Neeraj Kumar Singh, Station House officer, Vijay Nagar Police Station, said, “We received a tip-off that two persons are going towards Ghanta ghar with some amount of demonetised currency notes.

The two accused were travelling on a motorcycle and were stopped near the railway crossing on Tuesday afternoon. One of the accused told police that they were going to an agent to get their old notes exchanged with new ones against commission.”

“The accused were identified as Vinod (32) and Sunil (24) and are residents of Bhagpat district. They were detained by the police and the income tax department has been informed” added Singh.

Even though the dead- line to exchange and deposit demonetised currency notes for Indians has expired, people are still trying to find illicit ways to exchange their residual notes. The agents are charging high commission rates to get their money exchanged.

It seems like some NRIS are also involved in the corruption as now, only they can get the old currency exchanged through Reserve Bank of India till March 31.

This is the third incident reported in last one week where people carrying old currency notes were detained by the police.

Four persons were detained by the police carrying Rs 15.3 lakh in demonetised currency notes while another similar incident was reported on Saturday when four persons were arrested by the police carrying Rs 49 lakh in scrapped currency notes.

Police is yet to ascertain the people involved in illegal conversion of demonetised currency.

People, majorly from Delhi are approaching these agents as majority of the arrested persons belonged to Delhi.
