ROBBER DUO POSED AS SPECIALLY-ABLED, HELD

- ANAND MOHAN J

NEW DELHI: South Delhi district police on Wednesday arrested two men and, in turn, busted a gang operating with fake deaf and mute people.

The two accused have been identified as V Babu and Yarampally Laksmarayya, both residents of Andhra Pradesh.

The modus operandi consisted of the two men going to rented accommodations in South Delhi and ringing the doorbell waiting for the occupants of the house to answer.

When the occupants would open the door, they would find the two men gesticulating wildly and showing pamphlets drawing attention to the fact that they were deaf and mute.

They would gain the sympathy of the occupants, who would then go inside the house to find some money for charity.

Meanwhile, the two would suddenly gain full body functionality, sneak into the house and, with expert precision, steal various valuables lying around and flee the spot.

Police zeroed in on the two when they received various theft complaints in Neb Sarai area about a gang operating in a similar manner.

“We had received similar complaints from Neb Sarai police area. We could not manage to identify them. So we coordinated with the Gurgram Crime Branch, who informed us that they had come across a similar gang operating out of Sarai Kale Khan,” said Additional Commissioner of Police (South) Chinmoy Biswal.

The police later deployed their informers in Sarai Kale Khan area, looking for Teluguspeaking men who fit the description.

Police managed to find the two accused when their rented house was raided. Police found various valuables at the spot, including mobile phones, laptop, cash, wallets, watches etc.

During their interrogation, the accused revealed that they had come to Delhi around a month ago.

“They are very young and were innocent looking, which they used to their advantage. They also did not know Hindi and would speak in Telugu. They would only target houses without security guards like rented accommodations and PGS,” Biswal added.

The two men were brought to Delhi by one Karthik, who had come to Delhi a year ago.

Karthik is repordetly the main kingpin of the gang and is Babu’s elder brother. He is currently absconding and the police believe that he has fled to his native village in Andhra Pradesh.
