- RAHUL SINGH

GHAZIABAD: After duping lakhs of people on the pretext of providing the world’s cheapest smartphone, the managing director of Ringing Bells Mohit Goel — who is under police remand — had planning to set up a new company in his wife’s name, said police officials.

While interrogating the company’s accountant, police came to know from his confession, as well as some documents recovered from the company’s office, that Goel was planning to start a company called MDA Mobiles. The name would have been derived from the first letter of his and his wife’s names.

“An FIR has been registered at Sihani Gate police station, Ghaziabad against all five people involved in the scam. MD Mohit Goel, his wife Dhaarna Garg, General manager Sumit Kumar, Anmol Goyal and Ashok Chaddha were alleged of duping investors in the name of providing the cheap smartphones. We have detained Mohit and Sumit Kumar and are trying to gather valuable information by interrogating them” said Dalchand, SHO, Sihani Gate police station.

Goel’s company Ringing Bell launched what was touted as the world’s cheapest smartphone at Rs 251. Lakhs flocked to the company’s website last year to order the ‘Freedom 251’ handset.

However, after failing to deliver the handsets to the customers, the accused were arrested by police last week based on a complaint from one of the investors on the alleged scam. A vast majority of the orders are undelivered.
