COUSINS ARRESTED, SAY THEY WERE IN ‘PARTY MOOD’
NEW DELHI: Three days after the fatal accident in Paschim Vihar that took the life of 17-year-old boy who has hit by a speeding Mercedes, the Delhi Police Crime Branch apprehended two accused cousins Savneet Singh and Hashmeet Singh from Rajouri Garden.
“The two were in a party mode and were enjoying the moment with the thrill of speed and did not see the scooty coming from the other side,” said Joint CP (Crime) Praveer Ranjan.
It was on March 5 that Atul Arora, a student who was to begin his Class XII the next day, was returning home when he was hit by a speeding Mercedes. He was flung into the air and landed on his head. Bystanders said that he was not wearing a helmet. The men in the Mercedes also dragged him for several metres before fleeing.
Cops say that they had formed several teams to arrest the accused. The case initially looked blind as the registration number of the car was not captured by the CCTV installed in the market but the locals provided the basic clues.
Due to the impact of the collision, the car was scrapped of some of its parts like the logo and the bumper which the locals handed over to the police. Getting the first clues, the cops formed several teams and the Crime Branch was also roped in.
During investigation, the Crime Branch under the supervision of DCP Madhur Verma got its first lead and information was gathered that one of the accused would come to meet his associate at Vishal Complex, Rajouri Garden. Acting on the information, a team under the supervision of Madhur Verma was constituted. A trap was laid near Vishal Cineplex, Rajouri Garden and at about 9 pm on March 7, one youth who was later identified as Savneet Singh, was apprehended.
“After sustained interrogation, he admitted that on the fateful day, he along with his cousin Hashmeet Singh was going towards their house. He was driving his Mercedes Benz car and his cousin Hashmeet Singh was accompanying him,” said Verma.
After the incident, both Savneet and Hashmeet paicked and fled the spot.
Savneet assists his father in his furniture business on the Tilak Road in West Delhi.
“Accused Savneet Singh, who was driving the vehicle and Hasmeet Singh have been arrested under Sections 279, 304A, 34 and 201 of the IPC. Both will be produced in the court on Thursday for judicial Test Identification Parade (TIP),” said DCP (Outer) Rishipal.
