Accused removed number plate to evade arrest

- ZAFAR ABBAS

After the fatal accident, the accused Savneet Singh and Hashmeet Singh realised that soon police would be looking for them. Realising the gravity of the accident, they first stopped to check if they left some clues at the accident site. They panicked realising that the logo and the bumper parts were missing.

Sources reveal that Savneet suggested that they should remove the number plate of the Mercedes Benz to evade arrest as this might get them caught on the way. Both of them then removed the back number plate and drove to Rajouri Garden to one of their known.

They parked their car at a vacant plot in Rajouri Garden. Savneet and Hashmeet then hid at several paces to evade arrest. They knew that the cops were looking for them and were confident that the missing number plate would buy them some time to flee. They also tried to get the insurance of the car done in a backdate to mislead cops.

“In their efforts to evade arrest, both of the accused removed the number plate. They also tried to tamper the evidence and hence IPC Section 201 was added,” said Madur Verma, DCP (Crime).

It was the eyewitnesses who saw the Mercedes and informed the cops . The crowd gathered at the spot after the accident and also collected the logo and parts of the bumper of the Mercedes and handed it over to the police, giving cops their first clue.

The cops are also investigating if the two were under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident in which 17-year-old Atul was killed on March 5 at around 10.30 pm.

Cops have already revealed that Savneet, who was behind wheels, was rash driving and on losing control over the speeding vehicle, hit the scooty coming from a different direction.
