- PIYUSH OHRIE

GURUGRAM: Facing continuous flak over piling of garbage at the Bandhwari waste plant, the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) will now be ensuring that no kitchen and wet waste products enter the landfill site.

The MCG will now be compulsorily converting waste into compost and only allow the solid waste products to reach Bandhwari landfill site.

The MCG has initiated talks with various RWAS in the sectors and colonies of Gurugram for setting up composting units in the residential units.

Sources at MCG highlighted that the move will enable better waste management in the city and also reduce the levels of garbage at the Bandhwari landfill site.

Presently, garbage from Gurugram and Faridabad is dumped at the 30 acre landfill site which is situated at the Aravallis forest range.

The MCG has been conducting a pilot study for around a year for effective segregation and recycling of waste in the city.

However, this time, officials at MCG mentioned that serious and mandatory measures will be taken by the corpora- tion towards effective recycling of waste.

The officials of MCG are in talks with various RWAS and administrative bodies over treatment of kitchen and wet waste products and converting them to compost.

Under the process of composting, the resident bodies have been explained to keep two separate bins of red and green colours for segregation of waste.

The green bin will contain all the bio-degradable waste products like kitchen waste, food waste and horticulture waste.

The red bin will contain non-biodegradable waste and recyclable dry waste products like paper, bulb, tube lights, plastic, glass and wooden materials.

The MCG will be setting up compost units across various private and public residential sectors.

“We now feel the time is appropriate to make citizens participate towards effective recycling of waste in the city. Maximum amount of waste today generated in the households are kitchen waste and wet waste that can be effectively recycled and put to a greater use. The officials of MCG now are in talks with various resident bodies of the city to convert these waste products into compost,” said Amit Khatri Additional Commissioner MCG. “We are now providing an opportunity to the citizens to be a part of the change than to complain. We hope that in the coming few months, Gurugram will be able to sort out the challenges of treating its waste products,” said Khatri.
