25K COPS TO ENSURE A PEACEFUL HOLI

- PIYUSH OHRIE

GURUGRAM: To enjoy a safe Holi in the Millennium City, the citizens of Gurugram will be under the scanner of Gurugram Police. Cops will be deployed on March 13 to keep a check any law and order problem that could arise in the city.

The prime task of Gurugram cops will be to ensure that there is no drunken driving in the city.

Besides this, they will also take stringent measures for offences like drinking in public places, rash driving and other traffic violations like riding two-wheelers without a helmet or not wearing a seat belt while driving.

Though the Gurugram Police are taking steps to ensure safety during the celebrations, certain residents expressed their angst about the Gurugram Police officials.

“The claims of the cops about maintaining peaceful celebrations are just hogwash. Many youngsters in areas like Gurugram-faridabad road conduct car races but no action is taken against them,” Rahul Sinha resident of Silveroaks residential condominium society.

“For many of the citizens like us such measures are seen as harassment by the cops,” added Sinha.

As traffic violations by several commuters lead to deadly accidents in the city, Gurugram Police have placed personnel at prominent public places.

The city police Commissioner Sandeep Khirwar has sent directives to various police stations in the city on ways to maintain safety for citizens during the celebration of colours.

“Certain citizens feel that enjoyment in festivals like Holi gives them the licence to violate law and order. Major complaints received by us during the celebrations are incidents of drunken and rash driving. The police will act strongly against these offenders.

"We will impose a heavy penalty on the offender. Also, if that fails to yield results, we shall impound their vehicles or arrest the offenders, said a senior Gurugram police official.

The officer also stated that anyone found violating the rules and jeopardising the safety of pedestrians will be penalised accordingly.

“Besides our local police station numbers, the Gurugram Police can also be contacted by means of social media to report a complaint,” added the officer.
