NEW DELHI: Delhi Police on Sunday unearthed a racket involving imposters, who posed as CBI officials and robbed a woman of her jewellery. Five conmen related to the case have been arrested.

The conmen belong to the Bawaria gang, long infamous for committing gruesome crimes.

Over the years, however, they graduated to soft-skilled crimes which yield higher results with minimal physical violence.

All the five arrested, Surender Kumar, Ramesh, Arjun, Ashok and Rattan Solanki are residents of Khyala in Delhi. who applied various modus operandi to cheat potential victims in markets.

The gang excelled in several ways of cheating commoners, including baiting females with the lure of fake currency notes to steal their jewellery, also by acting as goldsmiths and metallurgists.

Now, they posed as CBI officials on the pretext of ensuring women's safety in a make-believe crime prone area and deceived her in parting with her ornaments.

Over the past one year, several crimes of cheating under the hypnotic spell and by impersonation as Law Enforcement Officials were reported in various Districts of Delhi.

In one such case reported in January in Sarojini Nagar, one Laxmi Devi had reported that she was duped by a male who had approached her on the pretext of asking the direction to Ghaziabad.

Following this, he along with his associates hypnotised her and robbed her off Rs 5,000 cash and a gold ring.

The victim said, “The accused had posed themselves as CBI officers. They were in Sarojini Naghar market which they said was infested with robbery. They convinced me to take off my jewellery and put it in a handkerchief for my safety.”

According to DCP South Iswar Singh, their team made lists of all such similar cases reported over the last two to three years.

“After that, we studied all the un-worked-out cases which brought light to the broad contours of a specific gang. This gang was last noticed in 2013. Meticulous efforts were undertaken to infiltrate the ranks of the known associates of this gang.”

With this arrest, the cops stated that they have solved more than 24 such cases by similar modus operandi. “These accused might be involved in more than 100 cases,” said cops.
