Cops rope in Tamil IPS officer to overcome language barrier

- ZAFAR ABBAS

NEW DELHI: When the family of deceased Muthukrishnan flew to Delhi, the cops faced a language barrier issue, as neither deceased father’s Jeevanandam nor his kin knew the languages Hindi or English.

The Delhi police then roped in Additional DCP South West Manoj C who belong to the same district Salem of Tamil Nadu as the deceased.

“It t is a sensitive case. We did not want crucial information to be lost in translation. Also, we wanted an authentic person from Delhi Police who understands Tamil to help us in the investigation and also talk to the family,” said Manishi Chandra, Additional DCP South.

The 2011 batch IPS office Manoj C was seen as a connecting link between the family of deceased and the police officers who are investigating the case. Manoj translated the statements of Jeevanandam and informed the cops about the demands put forward by the family.

The presence of a Tamil speaking IPS officer at AIIMS mortuary where lots of Tamil students and political leaders gathered also pacified the crowd building trust and faith.

When the political leaders from Tamil Nadu visited the Mortuary they were approached by the Additional DCP Manoj C and were briefed about the police action and the proceedings to follow.

“I am facilitating the Delhi police to overcome the language barrier as most of the cops from North India cannot understand Tamil. I am talking to the family and students of the Tamil Nadu to communicate their concern to the cops,” said Additional DCP South West Manoj C.
