- ZAFAR ABBAS

NEW DELHI: Political Science Professor in Delhi University, N. Sukumar, received the news of Muthukrishnan death soon after landing in Delhi. Mutthukrishnan treated Sukumar as his mentor. Also, Sukumar was the local guardian of the deceased JNU student.

“As soon as I landed and switched on my phone, I was shocked to receive the message of Mutthukrishnan’s death. I rushed to the spot. The JNU administration is responsible for this as it is a clear case of discrimination,” said Sukumar.

Sukumar was associated with Muthukrishnan since 2014 and Mutthukrishnan held him in high esteem. The latter sought his help in academics as well as personal problems.

“I also helped him financially when he was a student at Hyderabad Central University. He never asked me for excess money. Once he also asked me to stop sending money after he got a fellowship.” recalled Sukumar. Sukumar stated that that recent Facebook post of Muthukrishnan clearly shows the discriminatory policies of JNU administration against the backward classes and the Dalits which might have provoked the student to take this extreme step. Dawa Sherpa, a Phd student in JNU alleges “The vice chancellor has a suffocating environment for the ST and SC. Things have been deteriorating in JNU against the Dalits for the past few months. The death of Muthukrishnan is the result of such situations. ”

Rahul Sonppimplee from BAPSA ( Birsa Ambedkar Phule students’ Association ) said, “I had breakfast with him in the morning on Tuesday in Jhelum hostel. I sang a Bollywood song and Muthukrishnan asked me to translate it into Tamil. He was not depressed.”
