Delhi Police on Wednesday filed an FIR in the case of alleged suicide of JNU student J Muthukrishnan. Earlier, the family denied their consent for the postmortem till the police added sections of the SC and ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act in the FIR.

“We have registered a case of abetment to suicide under IPC Section 306 and Section 3(X) of SC and ST Prevention of Atrocities Act. The FIR is against unknown persons. We are investigating the case seriously,” said Additional DCP South Chinmoy Biswal.

Meanwhile, the police sealed the Jhelum Hostel room of the decased in JNU and also his friend’s room, where he allegedly committed suicide.

The post-mortem of deceased was delayed for a day after his family and friends wanted the cops to add relevant sections to the FIR.

It was only after the FIR was registered was the consent for post-mortem given.

A large crowd of students gathered outside the AIIMS Mortuary from Wednesday morning.

The post-mortem started around 2 pm and was completed at 4.30 pm.

JNU students at the mortuary requested permission from the police to pay homage to Muthukrishnan by seeing his body for the last time.

After having a word with the AIIMS administration, police permitted the same.

Muthukrishnan’s friends were seen paying last homage, while some others even broke down and others were seen consoling them.

“We have lost a dear friend. He was a charming person. This is not the way we expected him to meet the last time,” said a friend.

The body was placed in a coffin and taken to the IGI Airport.

Delhi Police arranged for a bus for the friends who wanted to accompany the deceased student’s family to the airport.

The body was flown to Tamil Nadu from where it would be taken to Salem district, Muthukrishnan’s hometown, where last rites would be performed.

Earlier, the family of J Muthukrishnan had denied their consent for the post-mortem till the police added sections of the SC and ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act in the FIR
