Gurugram private schools continue TO FLOUT ADMISSION PROCEDURES

- PIYUSH OHRIE

GURUGRAM: With the admission process for the new academic session in progress, the private schools in Gurugram continue to face flak over their non-transparent procedures for admissions.

Even after receiving directives of displaying their vacant seats online by the Directorate of Education (DOE), Gurugram, most of the private schools are paying no heed to it.

A major reason cited for the private schools for not displaying their list of vacant seats online is to charge higher admission fees due to the limitation of seats. Also, this is done to prevent Economically Weaker Section (EWS) students in getting admission, stated the private schools. A large number of complaints is being received at DOE office in the city over the opaque procedures adopted by the private schools.

Even after DOE officials mention that the notices are being sent to the erring schools, most of the parents and observers complain that these schools are not following the orders.

Besides, not displaying the exact list of vacant seats online, there are also complaints of not being fully open about various components of the fees structures. A particular private school in the city had asked the parents to pay the amount in admission through hard cash.

“As per law, it is mandatory for the private schools to be transparent in their admission process. We have received certain complaints where in most of the private schools are displaying their list of vacant seat online. We have sent notices to them. If even after this we find that the management of the Private schools do not rectify their actions, action will be initiated against them,” said Neelam Bhandari, District Education Officer, Gurugram.

“The state education department holds the power to cancel the license of the schools if they do not follow the law but we do not want to take such harsh measures on the schools. Most of the parents still rely on the private schools for ensuring quality education for their children. However, the private schools have to be fair and honest in their approach,” she further stated.

In highlighting that lack of regulations in resulting in most of the private schools in the city for not following proper rules and procedures, Sumit Vohra founder Admission-nursery. com said: “Most of the private schools in the city continue to be nontransparent in their procedures as it allows them to then charge hefty fees from the parents who do not have any viable options.”

“Most of the parents who reside in Gurugram out of no desperation have to look for schools in Delhi. The reason for it is that their children either do not get admission in schools in the city or the fee structures are simply out of their reach,” added Vohra.
