NEW DELHI: A 25-yearold man killed a woman and injured two people during a stabbing spree on Tuesday, after he attacked three members of a family in South West Delhi's Dabri area.

The accused Sumit had originally planned to kill his neighbour Nitin, after he grew insecure of the latter's friendship with his wife.

In the ensuing chaos, Nitin's mother and sister were stabbed when they tried to save him. Nitin's sister sustained grievous injuries and later succumbed.

The deceased has been identified as 22-year-old Jyoti. Her mother, who is under treatment, has been identified as Lata.

Sumit was later arrested from the area and the weapon of offence was seized.

The incident came to the fore, when the neighbours heard loud shrieks of a woman pleading for help.

According to police, the accused lives in the same locality as that of the victims in South West Delhi's Dabri.

Sumit's father reportedly runs a grocery store in the same area.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (South-west) Surender Kumar said that the incident took place around 9 am on Tuesday, when an enraged Sumit entered Nitin's house with a knife in his pocket.

Seeing Sumit enter his house, a confrontation ensued between the two.

Nitin's mother and sister initially tried to subdue both of them and tried to reason with the two.

“Sumit managed to break free and stabbed Jyoti in the chest. Her mother raised an alarm and she was later stabbed as well. The accused then fled the spot, while the victims were rushed to the local hospital,” said Kumar.

According to the police, Sumit had planned to kill Nitin as he was insecure that his wife was getting close to him.

“Sumit had, on several occasions, asked his wife not to speak to Nitin as he did not like him.

"Sumit was insecure of the fact that his wife sometimes shared greetings with Nitin and Sumit wanted to avenge the same. We had never received any complaint from them in the past,” said a senior police official.

During his interrogation, Sumit confessed to the crime and told the investigators that he had often fought with his wife over the same issue in the last few days.
