NEW DELHI: In a shocking incident, a woman on Thursday reportedly committed suicide by hanging herself at Kashmere Gate Metro station in the national Capital.

On Thursday morning, the woman's body was found hanging from a water pipeline installed near the station's exit gate, at the end of platform number 2.

Officials from the Metro and the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) reached the spot as soon as they received the information about the alleged suicide.

A probe into the incident is currently underway. Officials are trying to find out how and when the woman allegedly committed suicide.

CISF spokesperson Manjeet Singh said: "A staff member of the cleaning department found the body at the Kashmere Gate Metro station around 8.30 am and informed the authorities about the same. He said the woman used a 'dupatta' to hang herself. The identity of the woman, who is around 28 years old, is still now unknown. No suicide note has been recovered from her possession."

The spokesperson added that deceased was seen on CCTV footage purchasing a token from the counter at the Metro station on Wednesday.

However, the cameras did not capture her leaving the station. "Yes, there are chances that she might have hid herself inside the station premises. We assure that nobody can take arms and ammunition inside the Metro premises. But we cannot predict which commuter has chosen the Metro premises to commit suicide" he added.

"Nothing could be found on the CCTV since the location where she hanged herself was out of the coverage of the cameras," the CISF spokesperson added.

"As per my knowledge, this type of modus operandi of suicide has never been noticed. Ever since I began my service in DMRC (Delhi Metro Rail Corporation), I have not seen such an incident," said a CISF personnel at the Metro station.

"It is possible that this woman might have not got out of the station at night and was possibly hiding somewhere inside the station premises," he added.

As per the data of CISF, a total of 74 cases of attempt to suicide were witnessed on Delhi Metro lines in 2016.

In the year 2016, 12 people have lost their lives by jumping in front of Metro trains in Delhi and 11 people have been saved by CISF while they were attempting suicide.

The commuters, meanwhile, have saved lives of 20 people who attempted to commit suicide on Delhi Metro premises.
