NEW DELHI: A 45-yearold freelance journalist was attacked by an unknown assailant while she was taking an evening stroll in a park located in North West Delhi's Ashok Vihar on Wednesday.

The journalist, identified as Aparna Kalra, is currently admitted at Fortis Hospital, where doctors stated that her condition is being monitored.

Kalra has sustained frontallobe fractures in her skull and had regained consciousness for a brief moment. She managed to tell police that she was attacked, before losing consciousness yet again.

Kalra had worked with mainstream newspapers in the past, before taking up freelance journalism. She resides with her family in Ashok Vihar area of Delhi.

“We thought this was a snatching attempt gone wrong. Later, we found that her belongings were left intact. We also don't know if she had any personal enmity with anyone,” said the scribe's uncle, H C Bhatia.

Bhatia told police that Aparna had left for her evening walk around 6.15 pm on Wednesday, and had reached the Picnic Hut, a park adjacent to her home.

Around 7.30 pm, her sister received a call from someone who spotted Kalra lying unconscious in the park.

Aparna was reportedly found bleeding from her nose and head. Her sister reached the spot and immediately took her to Deen Dayal Upadhaya (DDU) Hospital, where the doctors suggested her to shift Aparna to Fortis due to the nature of her injuries.

She was admitted to Fortis and underwent a surgery. “She has already undergone a surgery. She has received multiple injuries to her nerves located in the brain. She had a lot of fluid collection in her brain cavities, and underwent an emergency surgery to remove it at late night,” said Bhatia.

The police have registered a case of attempt to murder and are trying to ascertain the identity of the attacker. So far, they have not been able to get any crucial leads in the case.

“We have no eyewitnesses of this attack. We were informed about a woman lying unconscious in the park by a visitor. But the caller had not witnessed the attack,” said Milind Dumbre, DCP (North-west).

The family is also being inquired to get any possible leads, but they are also in the dark and have no knowledge of any possible enmity.

The police have formed several teams who are currently scouring North West Delhi. Sources have claimed that several suspects have been rounded up and questioned.
