Two-vote win in Chhattarpur ward raises eyebrows

- OUR CORRESPONDENT

A fight was reported late on Wednesday between supporters of two Municipal election candidates, after it emerged that the winning candidate had defeated her rival by a miniscule margin of only two votes.

The SDMC’S Chhattarpur ward had witnessed a nail-biting contest between the Bharatiya Janata Party and Aam Aadmi Party candidates which wasn’t decided till the last round of counting. In a tightly fought election, the BJP candidate from Chhatarpur, Anita Tanwar, defeated her nearest AAP rival Pinki Tyagi by the thinnest of margins. While Tanwar managed to get 8,415 of the total votes polled in the ward, Tyagi got 8,413. “I was trailing after the first seven rounds of counting, but we astonishingly began making up in last two rounds,” said Tanwar. Even then, it was only the last few votes that gave Tanwar the narrowest of wins by 2 votes over Pinky Tyagi.

“The ward was equally divided between AAP and us. We eventually got 8,145 votes, while they got 8,143,” Tanwar said.

Police could not confirm about the tussle between the supporters. Since there was no police complaint in the case, the police did not take any action in the case. “We got to know about the scuffle between supporters over the result in Chattarpur ward. They had written an application to the Returning Officer, who advised them to take a legal course of action,” said ACP (South), Chinmoy Biswal.
