DCW sends notice to cops over non-registration of FIR against Abu Azmi, G Parameshwara
The statements of both the politicians were broadcasted on multiple national news channels. It had a direct and adverse impact on women and girls all over the country, including those in Delhi
A notice has been issued by Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) to Bhisham Singh, DCP Crime in reference to the inaction of the Delhi Police for not registering an FIR against Abu Azmi, MLA, Maharashtra and G Parameshwara, Home Minister, Karnataka in context of the misogynic statements passed on mass eve teasing incident reported in Bengaluru on New Year's Eve.
On January 4, DCW had urged the police for an immediate registration of a FIR against the said politicians. However, after the span of four months, the Delhi Police said that the complaint regarding the registration of a FIR has been forwarded to the Commissioner of Police of Mumbai and Bengaluru for necessary action.
The notice stated that the Supreme court in its ruling held that it is not within the jurisdiction of the investigating agency to refrain itself from holding a proper and complete investigation merely upon arriving at a conclusion that the offence had been committed beyond its territorial jurisdiction.
“The statements of both the politicians were broadcasted on multiple national news channels. It had a direct and adverse impact on women and girls all over the country, including those in Delhi,” said DCW chairperson Swati Maliwal.
“Hence, the Delhi Police is liable to take strict action and file a FIR against the accused,” she added. The Commission has further objected to the forwarding of the complaint and has requested the police that FIR is registered in Delhi itself.
Abu Azmi in his statement on the January 1 incident said, “In these modern times, the more skin women show, the more they are considered fashionable.”
“If my sister or daughter stays out beyond sunset celebrating December 31 with a man who isn't their husband or brother, that's not right," he added.
