DU ADMISSION STARTS

- YOGESH KANT

As Delhi University will reopen its admission process from Monday, 19 colleges of the varsity are set to initiate new courses in the coming academic year with around 2,000 additional seats. But, they are yet to get permission from University Grant Commission.

Last year, the University had written to the 19 colleges to begin the courses that both academic and executive council had approved. But, it could not be started.

The courses are new in the particular colleges and may be introduced in other colleges as well.

“As these courses start, there will be an addition of about 2,000 seats,” said an academic council member and teacher at Shri Guru Tegh Bahadur (SGTB) Khalsa College.

However, the university decided that the science courses will have 32 seats each and humanities will get 40 each. Certain colleges that will not increase the seats, will adjust the current strength.

According to the senior official at DU, “New courses include Political Science (Hons) at St Stephen's College. Meanwhile, Indraprastha College for Women will start Sociology (Hons), while Delhi College of Arts and Commerce will start Mathematics (Hons). Bharti College, Ramanujan College, Daulat Ram College will start some courses. Moreover, Bsc in Forensic Science will be started at SGTB Khalsa College.”

An official source at the DU said, “Colleges have to get UGC' approval before increasing seats as it is the funding body.” At present, DU has 54,000 seats in 61 colleges.

Apart from these colleges, SRCC is also gearing up to introduce a two-year Masters of Business Administration (MBA) postgraduate degree programme from this year.

The course, which is currently pending approval by the university, is expected to have a profile similar to MBA programmes offered by IIMS. The college is expected to have 65 seats. However, SRCC will not require approval from University Grants Commission for this course as it will be funded by the college itself.

Divided into four semesters, the programme will offer 18 additional courses. "The new course will replace the existing two-year postgraduate Global Business Operations (GBO) diploma programme," said an official at SRCC. "We are waiting for the MBA programme to be approved by the university," added the official.
