11 nabbed in Delhi for betting on IPL final, 88 mobiles recovered

NEW DELHI: When the entire nation sat glued to their TV screens, watching the ball in IPL 2017 final in which Mumbai Indians defeated Rising Pune Supergiant­s in Hyderabad, 1,539 km away from the stadium several bookies gathered to bet on the outcome of the match in New Delhi.

However, the men in uniform were all set to ruin the party.

The cops busted two different betting rackets in Delhi.

The Crime Branch arrested nine while East Delhi police arrested two and recovered around 88 mobiles, three laptops and several record books from their possession.

A team of Eastern Range, Crime Branch unearthed an IPL betting racket that was being run from a five-star Hotel of North West Delhi and arrested nine people: Kunal Miglani, Sumit Kalra, Jitender Kumar, Nitin Harjani, Nikhil Goswami , Amit Kumar Dhingra, Sumit Sharma, Rajesh Jain and Naveen Kumar. 10 mobile phones, 3 laptops, 7 book numbers, 2 Local line numbers and some note sheets being used for booking of bets were recovered.

The bookies had booked the room in advance in a fivestar hotel in North West Delhi before the IPL final. On May 21, specific input was received that Kunal Miglani, Sumit Kalra, Jitender and their associates will be carrying their betting racket from the five Star Hotel of North West Delhi.

Immediatel­y, a team comprising of senior police officers along with the constables and head constables was pressed into action. The team soon reached the hotel and raided the room where live betting racket was being operated. The match was being played on big LED screens.

“All the nine accused persons were arrested and 10 mobile phones, 3 laptops, 7 book numbers (Mobile phones), 2 local line numbers/ Dibba and some note sheets being used for booking of bets were seized from the spot. A case under sections 3 & 4 Gambling Act was registered” said Madhur Verma, DCP Crime.

At around the same time another team of east Delhi police raided premises in Shakarpur and arrested two men Sunil,44 a resident of Rohtak (Haryana) and Parvez, 38 a resident of Shamli (U.P).

On getting a secret informatio­n in Shakarpur a team of cops reached the suspected house, two men were found sitting on the ground of their rented flat with a whole setup of 77 mobiles, calculator, diaries, a speaker, and microphone system.

“They were carrying out the betting for the ongoing IPL final cricket match.it was further found that Sunil was attending the phone calls while Parvej was writing the rates in the diary. At around 9:30 pm both the accused were arrested and all 77 mobile phones, calculator, two diaries and other items were recovered and seized.” said DCP East Omvir Singh.
