Senior citizen throws his hat in DU admission race

- ANAND MOHAN J

NEW DELHI: With the race for the admissions in the Delhi University (DU) underway, lakhs of young students have been preparing for what will be a long and arduous journey.

However, it is not just youngsters who have been fighting the cut throat competition, as even senior citizens have thrown their hat in the race.

66-year-old Nargesh Chadha had completed his B Com from Delhi University in 1976. After completing his degree, he went onto serve in the Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) and was also working with the BJP cabinet minister for Science and Technology and Ministry of Earth Sciences, Dr Harshvardhan. However, this did not quench his thirst for education, which Nargesh claims was his “first love”.

“After completing my B Com course from DU, I also did a course in medicine from Chandigarh. Then, I also went onto do a Diploma in Mechanical Engineering from Fiji Islands,” Nargesh told Millennium Post.

After completing three courses, Nargesh had to wait for two decades before he applied for a BA in Urdu.

“I have always been passionate about languages. I picked up Urdu because it is a beautiful language. I can speak in fluent Urdu,” he said.

However, passing the second year with distinction did not suffice Nargesh, who now wants to apply for an MA language course in German or Urdu.

Nargesh's grandson has started speaking in German, and he wants to pick up the language so that in the future he may not be deterred by the language barrier.

“My grandson has started speaking a few choice words in German. I do not want to miss out on interacting with him because of a language barrier. If I do not make it to the German course then I would like to continue with Urdu and hope that I will get admitted in the MA course,” says the avid learner.

“Even if I don't get admitted in my course of preference then I will apply for a personality development course,” Nargesh added.

Nargesh has been learning the language through correspondence.

However, he now wants to become a full time student and dedicate his entire time in academics. Nargesh said that his age will not deter him as he now has all the time in the world.

“One must not let his age restrict himself. My entire life I have been working and now I have all the time in the world to pursue my dreams,” Nargesh further added.
