- YOGESH KANT

NEW DELHI: The newly inaugurated ‘Heritage Line’ of the Delhi Metro has made a major breakthrough into the old city of Shahjahanabad. It has paved a convenient way for commuters and tourists to experience the Walled City of Delhi.

Following the legacy of heritage, the extension has given the palate of history and successfully engraves in a way that grabs the attention of all the commuters.

A key facility made available by the Heritage line includes e-pay- ment. The stations have special gates installed enabling entry via e-wallet services like Paytym.

Manoj Tyagi, a senior citizen of Meerut said, “Young generation do not have time to read the history of Delhi. Through this, the young people will be inspired to read 200-yearold history. Ironically, even brilliants student of Delhi is unaware of such rich heritage.”

The Delhi Metro and INTACH have installed 48 3D Panels in Delhi Gate station, which showcases the transformation of Old Delhi over the years. The Kashmere Gate station’s art installations include a huge detailed map of Shahjahanabad, outlining the immediate developments after the 1857 revolt.

Photos of the Khooni Darwaza and glass paintings inside the churches in the area are framed under painted metallic arch that signifying the ancient architecture.

Now, places like Daryaganj, Jama Masjid, St. Stephen’s Church and Begum Samru’s Palace will be accessible because of the heritage line.

Delhi Metro authorities hope that the new line will reduce congestion in stations like Rajiv Chowk, known for its footfall of 5 lakh passengers per day. They expect a rise in Kashmere Gate since it will serve the new line in addition to the yellow and red Lines.

With the addition of this line, Delhi Metro is surpassing the mass-transit networks of Seoul, Tokyo, and Moscow.

“Using private vehicle during the peak traffic hours takes an hour to reach Kashmere Gate from ITO. With this line, it will be reduced to few minutes,” said DMRC spokesperson .
