After 20-yearold Rajat saw an episode of TV crime drama show 'Crime Patrol', little did he knew that the reel plot would leave deep impact on his real life.
On Saturday afternoon, not only did the young man attempt a robbery with his associate, but also chose his maternal grandparents' residence in Sector-7 Rohini for the crime.
However, all did not go according to the script as the elderly couple prevented the robbery by raising an alarm and alerting the neighbours, who eventually caught the two youth.
Around 12 pm on Saturday, Rajat's friend Rishabh – who was disguised as a gas stove mechanic – managed to gain entry into the residence of 78-year-old Ram Pal Miglani and 68-year-old Shakuntala Devi, on the pretext of checking their gas stove.
Their mistake of letting in an unknown person proved costly as, after a few minutes, Rajat entered his grandparents' flat as well. With his face covered by a helmet, Rajat and Rishabh tried to overpower the elderly couple.
The duo then pointed a toy gun and Rajat even tried to choke Shakutala Devi, when she screamed for help. However, the couple bravely managed to fight back and raised an alarm. Hearing their cries for help, the neighbours came to the house and the two men were caught.
“Rajat, being their grandson, had knowledge that his Nana and Nani had recently received a huge amount of cash as they had sold their house a while ago. A toy pistol and a hammer were recovered from the duo. Both accused are 20 years old and, after passing Class XII, they had been unemployed. Delhi Police has decided to honour the good Samaritans,” said DCP Rohini. Rishipal Singh.
A case of attempted house robbery has been registered and both accused have been sent to jail.
