Registrations begin for DU postgraduate admissions

Over 72 different courses across 47 departments for postgraduate, Mphil and PHD admissions are in the offing

Delhi University’s online registration process for postgraduate, Mphil and PHD admissions to 72 different courses across 47 departments began on Monday evening.

The varsity has revamped its postgraduate (PG) admission process and completely digitised registration for most of its courses.

According to Maharaj K Pandit, chairperson of DU’ admission committee, around 650 seats would be announced for Mphil course and around 850-890 seats would be allotted for PHD courses. He added that the exact number of seats will be finalised soon.

The seats have been calculated roughly based on professors’ freedom of choice whether to offer a seat this year or not.

“At a point of time, eight research scholars would be mentored by a professor, six scholars by an associate professor and four by an assistant professor,” Pandit said.

Admissions would be based on two modes – 50 per cent of total intake of students will be based on merit, while the remaining 50 per cent will selected through offline entrance examination in six centers – namely Delhi, Chennai, Guwahati, Kolkata, Nagpur and Varanasi – between July 1 and 6.

While Mphil and PHD aspirants – who have a fellowship from the University Grants Commission, or Council of Scientific & Industrial Research, or National Eligibility Test, or any central government institutes – need not have to take up entrance exam, those who do not have it have to appear for the entrance exam.

However, students from both categories must appear for the interview. “During the interview process, all candidates including those who possess a fellowship and those who do not have it, will be evaluated equally,” Pandit said.

All the aspirants of PG, Mphil and PHD courses must register online at with a fee of Rs 500 for general and OBC category, and Rs 250 for SC/ST and Persons with Disabilities (PWD).

Meanwhile, officials also said that the help desk set up for helping undergraduate admissions would also serve for PG students, but Open Day sessions would not be held for PG aspirants. “Eligibility criteria for hostel admissions for selected candidates will be either based on their entrance test scores or merit list,” Pandit said.

Online registrations for PG admissions would close on June 22. Offline entrance exams would be held between July 1 and 6, results of which would be announced between July 7 and 12.

The first admission list would be released on July 16 and classes for all courses would begin from July 20.

“We are expecting 35,000 online registrations this year,” said a official of the varsity.

Reservation of seats is as per the national policy for SC/ St/non-creamy layer of OBC candidates.
