DU introduces 5-yr integrated course in Journalism

There will be four foreign language options before the students –Arabic, Chinese, Spanish and French. Also, two Tamil and Bengali

NEW DELHI: Students who wish to pursue a career in journalism and are confused where to take admission may breath a sigh of relief as Delhi University is going to introduce a five year integrated course in Journalism in the next academic session.

The students will have the provision to exit after three years with a bachelor’s degree.

The proposal to start Journalism school got an approval by the university’s standing committee of academic affairs and now is set to be placed at the Academic Council for final approval.

DU Vice Chancellor Yogesh Tyagi had last year proposed for introducti­on of five-year integrated course in journalism.

In an academic council meeting last year, the VC had brought up the idea to introduce the course. The VC had set up committees of experts on cyber security and journalist­s to work on the syllabus and course content.

The course will offer papers on data journalism, investigat­ive journalism, media and psychology, media and history, editing, writing, documentar­y making, along with compulsory foreign and regional languages.

There will be two regional languages as well – Tamil and Bengali.

Students will have to learn one foreign and one regional language.

There will be a total of 60 seats and the admission will be based on merit this session and from next year, the admission will be entrance based, confirmed officials of the committee. The course comes under the ambit of the Faculty of Social Sciences.

The introducti­on of this course is set to give the private colleges a run for their money as the fees for studying this course will be around Rs 30,000 per semester, committee of academic affairs officials confirmed.

The private colleges offer these courses at a much higher fees.

Six colleges in Delhi University already offers Journalism at undergradu­ate level.the colleges are Lady Shree Ram College for Women, Kalindi College, Kamla Nehru College, Delhi College of Arts and Commerce, Maharaja Agrasen College, and the Institute of Home Economics.
