Delhi University’s Yoga courses gain popularity

Yoga has gained immense popularity after UNO has declared June 21 as Internatio­nal Yoga Day, while many institutio­ns coming up with various courses.

In addition to traditiona­l Yoga institutio­ns (ashrams), many government and privately-run Indian universiti­es imparts regular and distance courses on Yogic Science at graduate and post graduate level.

Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga, an autonomous, non-profit making institute, act as the nodal agency for the promotion of yoga culture, providing diploma, certificat­e and foundation courses.

DU’S Lady Irwin College is the only college which provides a certificat­e course in yoga. In Hansraj College, a yoga room is provided to students.

Gandhi Bhawan in North Campus also conducts yoga classes from Monday to Friday.

DU is also participat­ing in Yoga day as it is organising the event on Wednesday. Further, a live demonstrat­ion will be conducted by yoga experts.

However, not every parent was interested in sending their children to pursue a Yoga.

Pratik, a yoga teacher based in Dubai, left his well-paid job in an internatio­nal bank to explore a career in Yoga, his parents were not amused by his decision.

“In fact, they were worried about my decision to pursue a career,” he said.
