Cops impart lessons to industrialists on cyber crime

- ZAFAR ABBAS

NEW DELHI: Cyber crime is a nuisance to all but it has been seen that chances of rich people incurring a huge loss are always high. There have been instances where industrialists have been duped through e-mail communication where transfers of lakhs and crores of rupees have taken place into fraudulent bank accounts.

This scenario forced the Delhi Police to educate the industrialists in their area to combat cyber-crime on and save themselves from falling prey to online scamsters.

Some specific trends and patterns were noticed after minute scrutiny and analysis of such complaints were carried out. While dealing with the same, one such trend has been identified by District Cyber Cell of South-east District, which is related to the fraudulent online transaction through fake emails. This way the money gets transferred to the wrong bank accounts especially in Okhla Industrial Area which is a hub for commercial activities at a larger level.

“Online frauds are committed by sending instructions for transferring amount to a certain bank account through fake emails purportedly from higher authorities. These emails are shown to be sent either from the similar IDS as that of higher authority in the respective organisation or it is deceptively similar to deceive the recipients for acting upon the instruction conveyed in an email,” said DCP South-east Romil Baniya.

Those who are well versed with the technology could easily spoof the email ID whereas similarly deceptive email ID may be created by anyone having a criminal bend of mind.

“Further analysis of such transfer suggests that in maximum instances, the money is transferred in accounts of banks situated in India which is either opened on fake IDS or belong to innocent account holders are who are not even aware of legal consequences of allowing their accounts for such transactions,” the officer added. 45 industrialists from Okhla received tips from South East Police on ways to prevent cyber frauds. This included confirming the transaction related information through an alternative mode of communication in addition to the emails. If any amount is to be transferred through online banking channel, then the details of the transaction must be confirmed through fax, Whatsapp, telephone, text messages etc. Also, they were instructed to not be solely dependent on emails.
