Kovind’s performanc­e in RS better than others

NEW DELHI: Amid questions over political credential­s of NDA’S presidenti­al candidate Ram Nath Kovind, it has come to the notice that Kovind remained very active during his 12-year stint as a member of the Rajya Sabha.

According to the Rajya Sabha Secretaria­t’s data analysed by Millennium Post, the performanc­e of Kovind has been much better than several sitting members of the Upper House.

The NDA’S presidenti­al candidate had participat­ed in total 89 debates and his average presence in the house was 87 per cent, which puts him in the club of best-performing members of the Elders House. When it comes to asking questions during the parliament­ary sessions, Kovind’s performanc­e was much better as he had asked 283 questions while participat­ing in 44 sessions of the House during his two consecutiv­e terms from 1994 to 2006.

Kovind’s presence in the House was 100 per cent for about 14 sessions, while his presence was 90 per cent in the remaining 28 sessions. According to the data, the former Bihar Governor had asked 283 questions related to total 34 ministries and his most of the question were related to using the photo of Dalit’s icon Bhim Rao Ambedkar on currency notes, the appointmen­t of board members of different public sector banks from the communitie­s of SC/ST.

His performanc­e in spending funds from Members of Parliament Local Area Developmen­t (MPLAD) scheme has also been far better than several other members. Given that Kovind was allocated Rs 20.36 crore under the MPLAD scheme for his two-year tenure, he spent his entire fund on the welfare schemes.
