Policy on Physical Education in best four subjects leaves students foxed

Some colleges in Delhi University are reportedly refusing to consider Physical Education as a best four subject

Students who studied Physical Education as a subject in Class XII may be at a disadvantage, as some colleges in Delhi University are reportedly refusing to consider it as a best four subject.

“We don’t consider Physical Education a best four for courses like Mathematics, Economics and Psychology. Admissions are done on the basis of process of elimination. We can’t admit everybody. So, we set out eligibility criteria. Also, according to guidelines given by DU, subjects related to the course a student applies for should be considered,” said an official at Indraprastha College Women.

“Physical Education is an easy scoring subject. That’s why students opt for it in Class XII. If they can’t take it in their best four, what’s the point of opting for it” questioned Pramod Pandey, an aspirant’s father.

“Every college decides its criteria independently. Some colleges in DU might have taken Physical Education in best four. But it is not so in our college for some courses. In courses like Bcom (Hons), Mathematics, Economics, we do not consider Physical Education,” said an official at Bharati College.

The policy at Lady Shri Ram College, however, is a bit different. On choosing Physical Education, there is deduction of 2.5 per cent in the percentage of best of four.

“I scored 96.5 per cent and with the procedure of the college, if I include Physical Education there is a cut of 2.5 percent. I am waiting for the second cutoff,” said an Amina Mariyam, an LSR aspirant.

“The policy is decided by the colleges’ committee. Only one vocational course is to be included, so we decided not to consider Physical Education for any of the honours courses. This criterion depends from college to college,” an official at Satyawati College told Millennium Post.

Meanwhile, an applicant of Miranda House said: “I added Physical Education in my best four subjects, and was not aware that this year colleges will not add up marks of that subject. Now, without that subject I am not able to get BA Economics (Hons).” However, an official at Miranda House said the college does not reduce 2.5 per cent for Physical Education for its BA programme course.

Meanwhile, the University has not given any confirmation on whether Physical Education will be considered as a best four subject.
