Orphanage in Ggn under scanner for flouting norms

Recent raids by the district authorities at the branches of Ujjwala Niketan, a child orphanage and welfare centre, have highlighted large scale incidents of wrongdoings at the NGO.

On the basis of repeated complaints about the centre having flouted norms, Gurugram officials carried out a surprise inspection at the organisation’s branches in Sector-4 and Hayatpur.

According to some officials, not only were children at the centre found to have been exploited, but no proper records were maintained about the number of children registered at the centre.

Large scale discrepancies were found in stating vital information about the children, such as their age groups and their place of birth.

More disturbingly, some children have also been found to be missing from the centre.

The centre claimed that most of the missing children have been sent to Goa. However, when asked about the objective for which they were sent, the management did not give valid reasons to the officials.

Taking cognisance of the issue, the district officials registered a case against Ujjwala Niketan at the city police stations.

“All these problems, if not resolved, puts the security and welfare of young children at risk. We have registered the case against the orphanage and welfare centre in the respective police stations and will assist them in every step of investigation,” said Suruchi Atreja, senior public official who led the raids.
