NEW DELHI: Delhi Police rescued two minor Assamese girls who were trafficked from their native village and sold into prostitution in the Capital on Wednesday and has also managed to arrest the trafficker from north east district on the very same day.

They have been sent for counseling and other girls who may have been trafficked are also being identified, police said on Friday. The girls were reportedly kidnapped from Assam on May 11 and were forced to indulge in prostitution.

The sex trafficker was identified as Mujahid, who was arrested by a team comprising of nine policemen, including woman constables. Also, a Maruti Wagonr which was used by the accused of transportation of girls was also recovered. The police received the information that the girls were abducted by Mujahid, who was trying to sell them to his client. They also got information about the car used by the accused to sell them. On the basis of this information, they laid a trap near Shastri Park. With the help of informer, who identified the girls, they apprehended the sex trafficker and saved the minors. According to police, Mujahid accepted his involvement in trafficking of Assamese girls during the course of interrogation. He revealed his reason for him getting involved in the trafficking business was due to high profit.

“Mujahid who originally hails from Kerala came to the city after his parents died. He initially worked in a meat shop after which he got into the trafficking business,” said a senior police official.

He had been involved in trafficking for years and has been forcing girls into prostitution. He was also arrested in 2014 for a rape case and has served his time in jail for two years. After his bail, he again became a part of sex racket, police said.

“Both the minor girls have been produced before Child Welfare Committee and Assam Police has been informed of further investigation on their part,” said DCP Madhur Verma, north-east district.

Police said that the rescued girls will now undergo a rehabilitation process after which they will be repatriated to their native village in Assam. Their parents will also be identified and notified about the incident.
