Travelators to come up at Airport Express line, other metro stations

- YOGESH KANT

NEW DELHI: The Delhi Metro is making travelators for the first time on line of airport at key interchange stations, especially where the distance between the two intersecting metro lines is more than 300 metres.

The Phase III of the Delhi Metro will have two new corridors-mukundpur to Shiv Vihar (line 7) and Janakpuri (west) to Botanical Garden (line 8).

Meanwhile, the silver lining in the whole project is that walking for commuters from one point of the station to another is going to be quicker and hassle free. The Rajouri Garden station in the Majlis Park — Shiv Vihar corridor (Pink Line) will be connected with the existing station of Dwarka Sector 21 — Noida City Centre/vaishali through a Foot Over Bridge (FOB) which will have four travelators covering a distance of 310 metres. The station will directly connect west with south Delhi.

These lines will intersect at certain stations, called interchange stations. To ensure easier access to commuters, Delhi Metro is introducing travelators in stations like Dhaula Kuan ( Airport line) the Dhaula Kuan station (of the Airport line), the distance between the existing platform and the platform that will come up providing connectivity to the South Campus station of line 7 (MukundpurShiv Vihar) is almost 1 km. Here, the foot over-bridge will have 22 travelators.

“Foot overbridges are being provided at all the interchange stations. But where the distance between the two platforms is more than 300m, we are also putting in travelators for the ease of commuters,” an official said. For instance, at Rajouri Garden, the distance to the platform while intersecting with line 3 (Dwarka-noida/ Vaishali) is 310 metre, while at Punjabi Bagh, the distance is 770 metre. In both these stations, travelators will be provided. There foot over-bridges will have four travelators and the width of the them will be 7.1 metres. “Since the long distances can prove to be difficult for some commuters, the travelators are expected to make the changeover much easier,” said the Delhi Metro official. However, “the lengths of the travelators are 50 metres to 120 metres,” he added.

To ensure easier access to commuters, this measure will be put in place soon by Delhi Metro authorities
