In a first, PGDAV College to get air quality monitoring station

NEW DELHI: PGDAV (Evening) College is all set to install an automatic air quality monitoring station in its campus, with help from the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC).

With this, the college will be the first educational institute to house a monitoring station. The station will cost around Rs 2 crore, which is likely to become functional from mid September.

The first-of-its-kind initiative to be taken up by an educational institution in Delhi is part of DPCC’S mega project, under which 20 such fully automatic stations will be installed at prominent places across the city.

According to an official at DPCC, “The stations will provide real time air quality data, both for scientific analysis and public awareness. For the fulfilment of the same, one such station is going to be established at the campus of PGDAV (Evening) College located at Nehru Nagar.

He further said that the set up will be operational by the second week of September and will monitor the air quality of Nehru Nagar and adjoining areas like Maharani Bagh, Ashram, Srinivaspuri, Lajpat Nagar, among others.

The principal of the college said they had approached DPCC and taken the initiative, following the directions of Supreme Court and the National Green Tribunal (NGT). “We will be the first educational institution in the city to have an ultra-modern station, costing approximately Rs 2 crore,” he stated.

The college authorities are also planning to encourage its faculty members and students to use the station for research purposes.

“We will encourage students and faculty members to gather the data from time to time to for their research on growing air pollution in the area. They can easily track the trend and make good use of it,” the principal added.
