POLICE TRAVEL IN PLAIN CLOTHES INSIDE METRO TO CURB CRIME

NEW DELHI: If you are travelling in a Metro, the person who is standing next to you in a plain cloth can be a Delhi Police personnel as the city police in a bid to increase security for women and to control petty crime like theft are taking a journey of different stations in simple clothes.

According to police data, till mid August, more than 7,000 people were challaned for entering women compartmen­t whereas in same period around 17 cases of molestatio­n was registered in which 15 cases have been worked out.

Talking to Millennium Post, Deputy Commission­er of Police (Metro) Pankaj Kumar Singh stated that they have taken the initiative to curb crime inside and outside Metro stations.

“The team which travels inside the metro provide a complete security inside the compartmen­ts especially for women,” said Singh.

The police official claimed that if they witness any crime happening inside the Metro, they will take quick action.

Police sources said that during the investigat­ion, they have found that some people enter the women coach deliberate­ly.

“We will take strict action against those people who enter the women compartmen­t,” said the DCP.

In the year 2016 (till August) around 7,168 people were challaned whereas 16 cases of molestatio­n of same period were registered by police.

On August 16, Delhi Metro Police arrested a person accused of molesting an office goer in a running metro train.

During interrogat­ion, it surfaced that the accused committed this crime under the influence of alcohol. Police sources claimed that the police personnel’s will thus travel to every station to keep a check on the miscreants.

DCP further stated that they have also heightened the vigil of two busiest Metro stations Rajiv Chowk and Kashmere Gate in order to curb crime.

A specific time period had been decided for patrolling which was not disclosed by the DCP as it can alert the criminals.

Police sources said that for the security, they have taken police personnel’s from their 14 police stations.

Sources further claimed that police in their investigat­ion have found that most of the criminal gangs involved in committing crime like theft are from west, central and north-west districts.

In recent arrests, Metro police arrested two women thieves and during interrogat­ion, it revealed that they committed the crime in a group of two or three.

First, they target a passenger having a bag on the shoulder in a crowded Metro and one of them covered the bag with her Saree and other one opens zip of the bag and steals items kept in the bag.
