- PIYUSH OHRIE

GURUGRAM: One of the major reforms that was brought in the Gurugram civic elections by the government was that all the candidates that were contesting should be educated.

As citizens of Gurugram have made their choice and selected their councillors, the democratic process has also resulted in ensuring that for the first time those in charge for governance of the city are all literate.

Among the 35 councillors there is an interesting mix of educational qualifications.

Having educational qualifications was one of the major political planks which most of the candidates used while campaigning and their bid to impress the voters in their constituency.

While most of them are lawyers, there is also civil engineer who has been elected.

Interestingly, there are also some candidates that have not even completed their Class X as they failed to clear the examination.

Out of 35 councillors, there are eight graduates and four post graduates.

Not only having the educated people at helm of affairs but also having largest number of women members was a first in the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) elections.

There are total of 15 women that have been elected. Most of the women are also highly qualified.

Rimple Yadav, who emerged victorious from Ward-5, has done her post graduation in political science.

Similarly, Madhu Batra who was chosen from Ward-16 has done her M. Com from Kurukshetra University.

“Education does play an important part especially in today's times when people expect a lot from their elected representative. Based on the knowledge I have obtained, I will to utilise it in the overall development of my ward,” said Batra.

“Most of the people especially the aged citizens in my ward recognise me during my stint as a civil engineer. Later I joined the social service and further deepened the bond.

“Ultimately it is not only educational qualification but also the ability to use it in a better way that matters,” said RS Rathee who was elected from Ward-34.
