Switch off cell phones while driving, warn cops

- ZAFAR ABBAS

NEW DELHI: To avoid mishaps on the road due to low visibility caused by smog, Delhi Police on Wednesday issued an advisory to motorists.

“It is advised that motorists observe certain precautions to avoid accidents and related injuries. Motorists are advised to take certain measures to avoid mishaps due to fog,” Joint CP Traffic, Garima Bhatnagar said.

Motorists have been told to switch off their cell phones while driving to reduce distractions.

“Do not stop on the travelled portion of the road. You could become the first link in a chain-reaction collision. Do not speed up suddenly, even if the fog seems to be clearing. You could find yourself suddenly back in fog,” said Bhatnagar told reporters.

Motorists have been told to check weather forecasts before driving. If there is a fog warning, they should to delay travel until fog clears.

If caught in the fog somehow, motorists are to slow down gradually and drive at a speed that suits the conditions.

Motorists are to make sure the full lighting system of their vehicle is turned on. “Use low beam headlights. High beams reflect off the moisture droplets in the fog, making it harder to see. If you have fog lights on your vehicle, use them, in addition to your low-beams,” said Bhatnagar.

Cops alerted that if the fog is too dense to continue, one must completely pull off the road and try to position one’s vehicle in a safe parking area.

Emergency flashers must be turned on and windows and mirrors must be kept clean.

Defroster and wipers are to be used to maximise vision. NEW DELHI: After one of them was once robbed by highway robbers who had booked his Ola cab, a group of cabbies in Delhi themselves resorted to robbery to earn a quick buck.

Like the robbers that had earlier looted them, this gang too started booking Ola cabs, would then rob drivers of the booked cabs and flee.

However, investigators soon caught up to the gang and nabbed them on Tuesday.

In the last 15 days, PCR calls were made about thefts and snatching by thieves posing as customers who had booked Ola cabs.

Most such incidents had the thieves boarding the cabs from Shah Alam Bandh Road and committing the thefts near Seven Seas Hotel Main Road, in Adarsh Nagar.

Soon, police teams were formed and a trap was laid, which led to the arrest of Rahul Wadhwa (25), Jatin Oberoi (32) and Bhuvan Sakhuja (24) on Tuesday.

On interrogation, the arrested accused revealed that used to book cabs through the Ola app and then rob the cab driver.

A slip containing registration number of several vehicles was also seized from Sakhuja.
