Gurugram schoolkids turn pollution crusaders

The deadly air level prevalent in Gurugram has resulted in various citizens doing their bit to improve the city’s air. At the forefront of this movement, however, thousands of children who are actively participat­ing in various platforms that has city’s degrading environmen­t as its main theme.

Recently, a group of 25,000 citizens signed a petition on poor air quality levels of Gurugram and handed it over to the Municipal Corporatio­n of Gurugram (MCG) commission­er V Umashankar.

Notably, out of this large group of concerned citizen, there were over 2,500 school children.

Besides pollution, a group of students have also been proactive in being a solution against city’s poor waste segregatio­n system.

In certain residentia­l societies, some of the children volunteere­d in collecting the electronic waste items and recycling it for better usage.

At a time when Gurugram and areas around it are grappling with the challenges of air pollution that seems to be only worsening, the biggest brunt of it has been faced by young children.

Owing to the challenges faced by the school going children, the deputy commission­er had ordered that the school timing will be changed from 9:00 to 3:30 pm.

However, as the level of smog reduced most of the schools turned back to their original timings.

The adverse effect of these conditions is more so faced by many students in Gurugram, who are studying in schools of Delhi and have to travel large amounts of distance.
