NEW DELHI: All India institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) is all set to open a center of excellence and advanced research for treatment of childhood neuro-developmental disorders.

The unit will be function from the child neurology division, at its pediatric department, meanwhile, the institution has also inked a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with IIFCL for partial funding of the centre.

“The creation of opportunities for high-end diagnostic and therapeutic research and facilitation of education and training in childhood neurodevelopmental disorders is required. There is a need for prioritisation of resource allocation, advocacy and policy implementation in this field,” said AIIMS in a statement.

The initiatives under this new centre include a national registry which will be developed to understand the epidemiological profile of neuro-developmental disor- ders. It will also pave the way for meaningful research, policy making and advocacy.

AIIMS said that the proposed centre will also act as a knowledge and training resource centre for care providers of childhood neuro-developmental disorders. The centre envisages developing a standardised comprehensive battery of investigations, including advanced genetic investigations in collaboration with the Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology.

This will help in antenatal counseling, preventing further birth of affected children in the families, and unveiling of newer pathogenic and therapeutic pathways.
