NEW DELHI: In a sensational incident, two criminals when challenged by a constable and a head constable opened fire injuring the constable on his left shoulder in Vasant Kunj of Delhi.

However, the assailants managed to flee after the shootout and are still absconding.

The constable has been admitted at AIIMS and is said to be out of danger.

The incident happened on Sunday evening when head constable Subhash and constable Satbeer were on evening patrolling in Masoodpur village. At around 6.20 pm, they found two suspicious persons roaming and asked them to stop. Instead of stopping, one of them started running and head constable Subash chased him. Constable Satbir caught the other one from behind. Suddenly he pulled out a country-made pistol and fired on left shoulder of constable Satbeer and managed to get the grip loose and ran away. The bullet pierced from shoulder of the constable. On hearing the gunshot sound, head constable Subhash came back and informed the police station.

“He is out of danger. A case under Sections 186/353/307/34 of IPC, 27 Arms Act has been registerd at Vasant Kunj (North) police. Teams are formed to arrest the accused at the earliest,” said a senior police officer. NEW DELHI: In a tragic incident in South East Delhi's Badarpur, four siblings studying by candlelight received burn injuries after a fire broke out in their house on Sunday evening. While two have been discharged, the other two are in a hospital's ICU undergoing treatment.

The incident occurred around 9:15 pm in Badarpur area. Immediately police and fire brigade were called to douse off the flames. “Ashu and Lucky and their sisters Rakhi and Deepali, all aged between eight and 13 years, were studying when a power cut forced to light a candle on top of a cooler, “DCP Chinmoy Biswal said.

The cooler, which had a plastic body, caught fire which soon spread to the entire room. The victims were rescued by a neighbour. NEW DELHI: The National Students' Union of India (NSUI) on Monday criticised the fee hike in the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) and ascribed the move to the "grant-cut policy of the BJP government".

This is going to make accessibility to higher education difficult for children from the weaker sections, the Congressaffiliated students' body said in a statement.

"In India, higher education is a means to bring social change in the direction of social justice. But this cannot be achieved with such increase in students' fees resulting from the grant-cut policy of the BJP government." It said the move was forced by the Finance Ministry's office memorandum to cut 30 per cent grants for central universities, issued this year on January 13.

"Even the state universities are going to face severe fund crunch with the central assistance being reduced to 50 per cent under Seventh Pay Commission (recommendations) from 80 per cent under Sixth Pay Commission of UPA regime (led by Congress)," it said.

A total of 163 courses will see a raise of 10-20 per cent in fees once the decision is implemented in January 2018, an IGNOU official said.

"NSUI demands the immediate withdrawal of this fee hike in IGNOU," it added, referring to Finance Ministry order.
