GURUGRAM: With rapid digital progress over the years, the rate of cyber crimes have also increased in Gurugram thus victimising many citizens who use this platform. Adding to the list of brazen crimes now is the latest complaint by a senior doctor at Medanta hospital that has been filed at the Sadar police station in the city.

In the FIR that has been filed the complainant has alleged that a fake Facebook account had been created on his name. Through this medium the people were encouraged to sell their kidney at 4.5 lakh US dollars that are approximately Rs 2.9 crore. Not only did the fake account had the doctor’s name and his recent photograph but it had the name of the hospital here is working along with the contact detail for the people interested in the offer.

According to sources, the account was functional for months. The complainant became aware of the crime when in his spare time was browsing through his account and in effect got to view fake account. Continuing with the investigative procedures, the police have filed the complaint under the IT act. Judging the seriousness of the case, senior police officials are involved in the case.

The complaint comes at the backdrop of events where various citizens have raised suspicion on the integrity of doctors in the city. In the past also there have allegations made against senior doctors in NCR for their involvement in organ trade.

As compared to other forms of crimes like online banking thefts, credit and debit cards fraud, stealing the data and duping people through fake websites this form of online crime still ranks lower. Yet, officials at cyber crime branch highlight that over the two years, it has become a challenge to deal with this form of crime.

“There is no doubt that as the nation is progressing digitally criminals are taking to this route to carry out their nefarious acts. Today practically every citizen has a Smartphone and therefore it has become easy for everyone with wrong intent to be a part of this crime, “said a senior police official from Gurugram police.

“Taking cognisance of this new form of crime our team is also trying to adapt to it. We have now begun to take steps to deal with this new form of crime. It is however also important for citizens to be careful and responsible in their use of technology,” added the official.
