AIIMS junior doctors await counselling for post-graduate courses

- OUR CORRESPONDENT

NEW DELHI: With the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) here having missed its deadline for counselling resident doctors who are to join its various departments, patients at the premier institute could suffer as the current batch of 150 resident doctors will run out of contract on December 31.

“To make matters worse, the administration not only delayed results for the resident doctors who are to join from January 1, 2018, but has also failed to update its software,” said Dr Vijay Gurjar, senior resident, AIIMS.

“For the first time in the history of AIIMS-DELHI, the examination section is not able to conduct counseling for MD/MS 2017 in time. This will result in delay in joining of resident doctors, from January 1, which was the norm every year,” said Dr Gurjar.

Questioning the administration’s failure, he said, “Now AIIMS will face acute shortage of resident doctors as those who have passed will finish their tenure by December 31. Who will be responsible?”

He added that online counselling is a good option, but the administration has failed and is still struggling with their software update.

The institute should have made arrangements for counselling much earlier, he added.

“All graduate doctors are waiting eagerly to join their departments and this unnecessary delay will be problematic for them, as their whole life will be disturbed by this. They will not be able to appear in exams and interviews, whose last dates are usually December 31 or June 30, according to a set pattern,” Dr Gurjar added.

He added that there has not been any notification or communication from the AIIMS administration on the issue yet.
