Over 16,000 prosecutions RECORDED FOR TRAFFIC VIOLATIONS
NEW DELHI: Revellers in Delhi welcomed the New Year with joy and celebration.
All around the streets and popular hangout spots in the city, Delhiites were seen in party mode.
Amid all the fun and games, however, many thrill-seekers also violated traffic rules and Delhi Police personnel – who were deployed for the protection of residents – took action and more than 16,000 prosecutions were recorded on New Year’s Eve.
According to Delhi Police data, there were 16,720 prosecutions related to traffic violation. Most violations were of driving without helmet, which were recorded at 3,665.
Meanwhile, as many as 1,752 prosecutions were recorded for drunken driving.
The data also claimed that 507 people were challaned for dangerous and/or rash driving.
Violation of one-way driving also entered the list of prosecutions, with 1,125 recorded on Sunday night.
Police sources said that over 1,000 personnel were on road for the safety of the residents and high level of security was maintained at strategic points.
In over 400 traffic points, district police and traffic police personnel were deployed, while in 125 areas police personnel with altimeters kept a tab on drunken driving.
Deepender Pathak, Special Commissioner of Police (Traffic) told Millennium Post that 90 per cent of the people involved in cases of violation of traffic rules and drunken driving were in sthe age group of 20 and 30 years.
He added that before 12 AM, the number of prosecutions made was 745.
After the clock struck midnight, the number of prosecutions increased to 1,007.
The police data accessed by Millennium Post stated that in the year 2015 on December 31 around 6,486 challans were there for violating traffic rules whereas in 2016 the number of traffic violation increased as 13,260 people were challan on a day before New Year.
