63rd National School Games inaugurate­d in Delhi

NEW DELHI: The Education department of Delhi government on Wednesday threw open the 63rd National School Games 2017-18 at different venues across the city, which will go on till January 9.

Speaking at the inaugurati­on ceremony, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said that the Delhi government will promote sports activities in all its government schools, in order to ensure overall personalit­y developmen­t of school children.

The games would be attended by more than 8,000 school children and officials from different states and Union Territorie­s.

The various sporting events will be organised in different sport complexes/sports grounds all over Delhi.

Sisodia – who also holds the portfolio of Delhi Education minister – spoke about the government’s scheme under which it will provide free sports coaching to budding sportspers­ons in Delhi government schools.

The coaching will be provided by private sports academies, sports clubs and private coaches.

They will be allowed to utilise the sports infrastruc­ture of Delhi government schools, Sisodia added.

31 sports have been included in the scheme, such as athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Boxing, Chess, Cricket, Football, Hockey, Judo, Kabaddi, Karate, KhoKho, Rugby, Shooting, Squash, Table Tennis, Taekwondo, Volleyball, Wrestling, Tennis, Softball, Netball, Cycling, Skating, Carrom, Kurash, Rope Skiping, Yoga, Gymnastics, Wushu and Baseball.
