NEW DELHI: After a gun battle with dreaded gangster in Okhla, Delhi Police arrested him on Monday.

Police claimed that the accused was wearing a bulletproof jacket for his safety. According to the police, the accused was identified as Tanveer (24), a native of Kasganj, Uttar Pradesh.

He was carrying a cash reward of Rs 70,000. The arrest was made by a team led by Inspector Special Staff Rajender Kumar after it received information about the movement of the criminal near Okhla Mandi in the early morning hours of Monday.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (South East) Chinmoy Biswal said that at about 3:30 am, police erected a picket.

At about 4.30 am a car came from the Lajpat Nagar side and the police party deployed at Garhi red light informed the staff deployed at Okhla Mandi red light and chased the vehicle.

On seeing the police party chasing the car, the driver of the car sped up. The staff deployed at a picket at Okhla Mandi blocked the road by putting barricades and a government Gypsy was parked in front of the car.

“The driver, realizing that he would be caught, opened the window of the car and took out his pistol and fired gunshots aiming at the police team.

“Meanwhile, the driver fired towards the Inspector Rajender and Sub-inspector Parvesh and bullets hit the bulletproof jackets of both the police officials,” said the DCP.

He added that the police opened a retaliatory fire in self-defense and the accused was overpowered. One of his associates fled from the spot. When asked whether the accused had any involvement in recent Kasganj violence, a senior police official claimed that they have not found any link so far but the investigation is on.

Police further claimed that in the night of September 22, the accused along with his associates had killed Wazid, a member of another gang.

The accused shot at 25-30 rounds at Wajid till his death. On the same night, Aarif Hussain (active member of Nasir Gang) was chased by Tanveer and his associate Anwar. Both shot 20-25 rounds at him till his death.
