China shipping firm MD in Pak killed by gunmen

-

KARACHI: A Chinese national, the managing director of a shipping firm in Pakistan, was killed on Monday after being shot in the head by unidentified gunmen here in what police are calling a targeted attack.

The victim identified as 46-year-old Chen Zhu was shot by gunmen who opened fire on his car when he was out on a grocery shopping with another Chinese national in Karachi's Clifton area, the Dawnnews reported.

The second Chinese national accompanying him was buying vegetables at the time of the attack and took refuge in a nearby superstore when he heard the firing.

According to police, Chen was shot in the head, while a 30-year-old passer-by was shot in the leg.

"It appears to be a targeted incident," police said. Nine bullet casings were recovered from the site of the attack.

The Chinese national, who was shot in the head, succumbed to injuries at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre.

Sindh Home Minister Sohail Anwar Siyal took notice of the incident and ordered deputy inspector general south to start an inquiry into the matter.

"All measures should be taken to ensure that the suspects are arrested," the minister said.

The Sindh inspector general of police has assigned the investigation of the incident to Counter Terrorism Department (CTD). He also directed CTD to register a first information report of the killing.

The incident comes nearly two months after China warned its citizens in Pakistan to be on alert after receiving intelligence reports about possible attacks targeting Chinese. TOKYO: One crew member was confirmed dead and another was missing on Monday after a Japanese military helicopter crashed in a residential area in the southwest of the country, reportedly injuring a local girl and setting a home on fire.

A 26-year-old co-pilot was found unconscious following the crash in the town of Kanzaki and later confirmed dead, a defence ministry spokesman said. "We are still searching for the 43-year-old pilot," the spokesman said, retracting earlier remarks made by Defence Minister Itsunori Onodera, who said both crew members on board were retrieved "in a state of cardiac and respiratory arrest." That language is often used by Japanese officials before deaths are officially confirmed. Quoting local fire department officials, the Asahi Shimbun daily said an 11-yearold girl who was in the house when the helicopter crashed was sent to hospital after injuring her knee. LONDON: British judges on Monday rejected a US request for the extradition of a man accused of hacking into thousands of US government computers, an AFP reporter in the court said.

Lauri Love, 33, faces charges in the United States for allegedly hacking into the networks of the US Federal Reserve, US Army and NASA, among others, in 2012 and 2013.

Kaim Todner, the law firm representing Love, hailed what it called a "landmark judgement". "The British justice system has taken the stance that we should deal with the matter ourselves, rather than accept the US government's demands," it said. "It has also been recognised that mental health provisions in US prisons are not adequate to satisfy us that Lauri would not have come to serious harm if he were extradited," the firm said in a statement. Love suffers from Asperger's syndrome. Judge Ian Burnett handed down the ruling, to cheers from people in the public gallery at the High Court in London. Love, who has dual British and Finnish citizenship, was arrested at his home in Britain in October 2013.
