Yamuna cleaning: CM blames ‘division of power’ for inaction

NEW DELHI: The Delhi government wants to clean Yamuna, but the project could not completed due to ‘division of power', said Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Monday.

He also said that due to the power structure of the state, every project gets stuck.

"We wanted to clean the Yamuna, but a part of it is under the central government; the DDA (Delhi Development Authority) also has a share.

“This power structure is obstructing every developmental work," Kejriwal said.

The CM had recently met Union Water Resources Minister Nitin Gadkari, to discuss issues related to Yamuna river.

The two held a meeting to review the sewage treatment plants on the River and measures to make the water body free from pollution.

Earlier this month, water supply in most parts of the Capital was disrupted due to increased pollution in the river.

"Due to the increase in pollution, many areas, including North Delhi, Central Delhi, parts of West Delhi and South Delhi, Delhi Cantt and NDMC areas will remain affected and water supply will be available at low pressure," the Delhi Jal Board had said.

Recently, the National Green Tribunal had also slammed the Delhi government for not formulating any plan to clean the Yamuna.

A bench headed by former NGT Chairperson Justice Swatanter Kumar had rapped the authorities, saying that except for shifting blame, the stakeholders – including the Delhi government – had no reasons to offer in support of their “inaction and non-cooperation” for completing the project.
