IMA, district bar associations of Delhi pledge support to ‘Raperoko’ campaign

The ‘Raperoko' movement launched by the Delhi Women for Commission (DCW), after the brutal rape of an eight-month-old baby by a 28-year-old relative, is galvanising support from all sections of society.

On Sunday, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) and distric bar associations of Delhi extended their support to the Raperoko campaign, which is aimed at ensuring completion of trials of sexual crimes cases against women and children by fast track courts within six months and ensures death penalty to rapists of children.

According to DCW, in a letter addressed to the Commission's chairperson Swati Jai Hind, the IMA stated, "We strongly support the people's movement ‘Raperoko' launched by the DCW chief to demand a robust criminal justice system, which ensures cases of sexual crimes against women and children are tried by fast track courts within six months and rapists of children are essentially accorded death penalty as a strong deterrent for others against such crimes".

The Commission also claimed that the doctors' representative body has further requested its state and local branches in the national Capital to join the Raperoko movement in full force.

Meanwhile, the co-ordination committee of all district court bar associations of Delhi also expressed support for the Raperoko movement.

Furthermore, they stated in a letter addressed to the Jai Hind that the 'Raperoko' movement initiated by her is the need of the hour.

The bar associations also said that unspent Nirbhaya funds should be immediately utilised for the welfare of women and girls.

The DCW chief has been on satyagraha since January 31, after the brutal rape case of eight-month-old baby gril and has pledged not to return home until March 8, the International Women's Day.
