Songs of the uncaged bird

THE EXHIBITION which showcased works of art by 20 women artists from the prestigious collection of National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA), came to an end on March 20.

Organised by The National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi, and Ministry of Culture, Government of India, ‘Songs of the Uncaged Bird’ had a successful run for 11 days at NGMA’S Jaipur House.

Women have stood by and contributed to all the areas of working in the making of society – be it, the social, economic, cultural and political. Among the historic landmarks, the reflections of the feminine in these power roles, both achievements and the hurdles on the road, were traced in the visual art practices. Thus, with this exhibition, National Gallery of Modern Art recalled the achievements of women artists who have contributed to the artistic landscape of the modern and contemporary period in India.

Women artists have explored and worked in many mediums, some even are the pioneers of the genres. The themes they work with are eclectic, beyond the feminine presence, but with the feminine sensitivity and rigour. Considering this, the whole body of work that the women artists in India have produced is immense. Keeping this in mind, this exhibition focused on some significant works of such women artists who have carved a niche for women in the field of visual arts to explore, innovate and contribute in the diverse visual languages of expression. Their visual modes may be subtle and simple, sometimes direct and bold, but the expressions are clear, loud and powerful.
