Alert neighbour prevents kidnapping of one-year-old girl

A drug addict’s bid to kidnap a one-year-old girl in outer Delhi’s Mangolpuri was thwarted after an alert resident in the area alerted everyone, led to the arrest of the accused on Saturday.

Police said they are probing the matter from all angles and suspect that the accused is associated with a gang involved in traffickin­g of children.

Police said the accused Yashpal lives in outer Delhi, adding that they found medicines from his pocket, suspected to be drugs.

The incident was reported when the woman resident saw the accused, who looked suspicious, tried to take the girl away. The woman alerted other residents, who nabbed the accused and beating him. A PCR call was made, after which police took him away.

Additional Deputy Commission­er of Police (Outer) Rajendra Singh Sagar said that the accused claimed that he wanted to play with the child. “The child was outside the house. If he wanted to play with the child, he could have played there. Why did he take the child? It gives rise to suspicion,” said Sagar.

He added that the case is being investigat­ed from the angle of child traffickin­g.

When asked, if the accused had any intention of sexually assaulting the child, the senior police official said the accused has not claimed such a thing.

In a CCTV footage, the accused was seen taking the child with him. A case has been registered.
