TWO KILLED IN HOTEL SEWAGE PLANT MISHAP, THREE OTHERS HOSPITALISED
NEW DELHI: Two men who fell in the sewage treatment plant at Vivanta by Taj Ambassador hotel near Khan Market succumbed on Tuesday after they were admitted to Moolchand hospital on Sunday. Three of the men who also inhaled toxic fumes are still undergoing treatment at the hospital.
Ravinder Pal (53), the contractual maintenance staff in Sewage Treatment Plant and Vikram (26), a contractual security guard of Taj Vivanta, died on Tuesday morning. Their bodies were sent to RML for postmortem. The condition of three others –Kamdev Patra, 58 years, a contractual maintenance staff employee of Ecopollutech Engineers, Gaurav Sukheja, 34 years, deputy chief engineer of Taj Vivanta and Nityanand (51), plumbing staff of the hotel, are said to be out of danger.
Police earlier said that five persons got trapped in the Sewage Treatment plant of Taj Vivanta hotel on Sunday where poisonous Methane and Hydrocarbon gases were leaking. It is said that Ravindra was the first one to enter and try to fix the leak and when he did not come out others followed. However, all five fell unconscious and could not come out. “A security guard alerted the hotel staff and the police. Later, the fire brigade came and rescued the workers who were admitted in Moolchand hospital in serious conditions,” said an investigator.
“We have registerd a case under 304 of IPC (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and are investigating the case,” said Madhur Verma, DCP, New Delhi. Meanwhile, a statement from Taj Vivanta said, “We are providing all possible support to their families and respective employers. Our thoughts and prayers are with their families.”
“Ravinder expired in the wee hours of Tuesday. He is survived by his wife and two daughters. He was the lone breadwinner of the family. We want the family to be duly compensated,” said Kanhaiya, elder brother of Ravinder Pal.
On July 15 in 2017, four labourers had died after they fell unconscious after inhaling toxic gas inside a tank in South Delhi's Ghitorni area. Later in August, three sanitation workers died while another remained critical when they went inside a sewer pipe to clean it in Southeast Delhi's Lajpat Nagar area. In the same month, two brothers died of suffocation while cleaning a sewage tank of a shopping mall in Vishwas Nagar in East Delhi's Anand Vihar.
